Work out your battery

South Australia's Home Battery Scheme has closed, so there is no state battery rebate open today. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is the main incentive for South Australian homes.

The federal discount

It applies in every South Australian postcode with no income test. Its value depends on your battery's usable capacity and the date your electrician issues the certificate of compliance. See your figure with the battery rebate calculator.

Retailer VPP incentives

South Australia's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) includes an activity for connecting a new or existing battery to an approved virtual power plant. Energy retailers decide what, if anything, they offer for it. The government does not publish a set amount, and figures you see advertised come from the retailers themselves.

If an installer or retailer mentions a VPP payment:

  • Ask who pays it and when.
  • Get the amount and the conditions in writing.
  • Check how long the VPP agreement runs and what it costs to leave.

SA rebate questions

Is there a South Australian battery rebate?

Not a state rebate. The Home Battery Scheme has closed. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount applies in South Australia.

Possibly. The state's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme includes an activity for connecting a battery to an approved VPP, but retailers set their own offers and the government does not publish a fixed amount. Ask for the offer in writing.

Does the federal discount have an income test in South Australia?

No. The federal discount has no income test anywhere in Australia. It depends on the battery's usable capacity and when the installation is signed off.
